5 Gift Ideas for a Person Who Has “Everything”

(There is some magic I would love for us to do together; see the fire-breathing dragon at the end.)

How do you choose a gift for a person who seems to have everything?

This sounds like a “first world problem” (and in a way, it is), but it is a challenge nevertheless. You want to show your affection or appreciation in a form of a gift to someone, but you believe that the person does not need anything. Or perhaps, you have an obligation to gift something to a person, but not sure what would work well.

So, what do you do?

Think about the ultimate goal for your gift: help someone experience joy, delight, excitement, laughter, warmth, and/or a pleasant kind of “wow”, right?

Here are some ideas that may work:

  1. Time. There are two types of “time gifts”: one to help the person save time, and the other – to help them spend time. Gift certificates for cleaning services or babysitting would fall into the first category; offering your time to spend together – like an outing for drinks, movie, performance of some sort, sports activity together, etc. – is in the second category.

  2. Something new or unusual. It doesn’t have to be expensive, just new or different for the recipient. (In this category of gifts, be mindful of not making the person spend their time where they may not have any). For example, look for an exotic collection of teas, a wine that is not typical, or chocolate with an unexpected flavor. In the best case, even if the person doesn’t acquire a new taste, the experience of using the gift will make a good story.

  3. Donation to a cause the person cares about. This gift shows that you know and understand the person’s interests, and care enough to take your time to do the research.

  4. Celebration. This may work for a close friend or relative. Create a mini-celebration of the gift recipient’s accomplishment, simply organize a small “celebration of life”. This doesn’t have to be a big outing, but perhaps an activity, food, or drink that spells “celebration” to both of you, and you can share together.

  5. Something personal to you. This may be a letter in which you share what a significant impact the person has had on your life. This could be a unique item that you brought from your travels, or something with a meaningful story that may also have significance to the other person (if you are ready to part with it).

One of the best, most treasured gifts I have ever received is a hand-written book of my grandmother’s recipes, in my grandma’s handwriting. What is the most treasured gift you have ever received? Would you, please, share your most treasured gift story with me
